With the continuous growth of the urban population, building land continues to decrease, and the property value increase, which has led to the need to think about new means of efficient utilization of building land. The Bridgescape design proposes a new mid-rise office building located above Interstate 85 next to the 14th street bridge in midtown of Atlanta. Utilizing the fluidity and ductility of steel, the building provides a contrast to the regular orthogonal grid of the city. The special site location and innovative use of steel provide a good idea for saving building land and responding to population growth in the future.
The whole city of Atlanta is located above the hills. There are high and low undulating terrain, staggering high and low buildings, and a dynamic skyline that creates a unique urban rhythm in the city. The inspiration for this design is derived from such a unique urban rhythm. The entire design is considered as a miniature of Atlanta city. Programmatically the architecture responds to independence and cooperation between individuals and groups, conceptualized as stacked architectural cellular elements organized around a central atrium. A steel truss system and steel panels complete the enclosure system. Spanning the interstate, the organic urban space is located on a hill-like plaza which gives the building a sense of dynamics and fluidity. This urban design echoes the unique urban rhythm while contrasting the rigidity of the orthogonal city grid.
